The Lafayette County Narcotics Unit is a multi-jurisdictional task force that was formed in 1991. The Unit is governed by a Board of Directors that consists of the Presiding Commissioner, the Sheriff, and the Chiefs of police from Odessa, Lexington, Concordia and Higginsville. The Unit is directed by the Sheriff. The Unit has 4 members that investigate illegal drug activity in the county. Most of the funds for the operation of the Unit are supplied by grants from the State of Missouri and the Missouri Sheriff’s Methamphetamine Relief Team. The Unit seized 27 Methamphetamine labs in 2003.
Methamphetamine has been the major focus of the Unit. One of the ingredients for the “Nazi” method of producing Methamphetamine is Anhydrous Ammonia, which is readily available to the “cooks” because of the agricultural nature of our county. The supply of Anhydrous Ammonia lures “cooks” from other areas to our county.
