Special Services

The Sheriff's Department has two K9s that provide valuable assistance to other agencies in the area.  K9s have a very keen sense of smell that allows the dogs to easily locate illegal drugs and suspects.  The department K9s are Belgian Malinois, a breed from Holland.  These dogs are very active and have high play drives that make them excellent working dogs.

The CAT team is a Specialized Weapons and Tactics Unit comprised of members from the Sheriff's Department and the Odessa, Higginsville and Concordia Police Departments. The team is led by Sheriff Kerrick Alumbaugh. The team serves high risk warrants, resolves hostage situations and participates in high risk man hunts. To maintain proficient skills in weapons and tactics, the team trains frequently and for long hours.

The Crime Scene Unit is a team of trained crime scene technicians that are also members of the Sheriff's Department, the Higginsville Police Department, and the Odessa Police Department. Members receive their training from the Kansas City Police Department Crime Scene Unit. The Unit is activated for major crime such as Homicide, Rape, major Methamphetamine labs, and serious property crimes such as burglary.

Crimes of a serious nature, or that require in-depth investigation, are handled by Detectives. The department has 3 full-time Detectives and 1 Special Investigator that works for the department and the Prosecuting Attorney.  The detectives have received advanced and specialized training in areas such as interview & interrogation, homicide investigation, child abuse, fraud investigation and "white collar" crimes.  Many of these crimes require intense investigation and record gathering.

D.A.R.E - Drug Abuse Resistance Education

Congratulations 2006 D.A.R.E. Graduates!

The Lafayette County D.A.R.E. program is a combined effort by law enforcement, schools and parents to educate children on the misuse and abuse of drugs and alcohol.

While participating in the program, students learn about the harmful effects of drug and alcohol abuse. Students learn resistance techniques or "Ways to say no", as well as, combating media influences on drug use. Numerous topics are discussed throughout the program such as handling peer pressure, raising self esteem, recognizing dangerous situations and making decisions about risky behavior. Students are introduced to ideas on dealing with stress and reducing violence. The students learn the importance of having positive role models. Another benefit from the program is that students understand that police officers, deputy sheriffs, parents, teachers or youth leaders will help them with difficult decisions.

Near the end of the program, students are asked to write an essay on what they have learned from D.A.R.E. and how it will help them in making their future choices. The program is concluded with a graduation ceremony for the students.

The D.A.R.E. program is currently taught by the Sheriff's Department at the Wellington-Napoleon School to the fifth grade students, Santa Fe Elementary to the sixth grade students and the Trinity Lutheran School in Alma to the fifth and sixth grade students. The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department also provides presentations to all grade levels and parent groups, as well as, Alcohol Awareness Week and Red Ribbon Week.
